BIOL C1001L - Introduction to Biology Lab Credits: 1
Corequisite: BIOL C1001 : Completion of or concurrent enrollment in BIOL C1001
Description: This laboratory course provides the hands-on application of concepts learned in the Introductionto Biology lecture (BIOL C1001) for the non-biology major. Students use experimentation andinvestigation to develop important critical thinking skills. Students engage in the process ofscience to explore the building blocks of life, the role and regulation of DNA, how populationschange over time, the movement of energy within and between living organisms, and how speciesinteract with each other and their environment. By the end of the course, students will be familiarwith some of the equipment and techniques used by biologists.
Part 2: Laboratory and hands-on exposure to the biological sciences, including the scientificmethod, data and measurement, microscopic analysis of cells, osmosis, diffusion, cell division, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, bacteria, protists, plants, fungi, invertebrate animals, andvertebrate animals. BIOL C1001 is either a prerequisite or a co-requisite to BIOLC1001L. Not for Biology major credit.
Transferable Transferable to both UC and CSU
General Education:
- CalGETC: Transfer General Education Requirements ( 5- Physical and Biological Sciences- 5C: Laboratory )
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Apply the scientific method, including recognizing the elements of experimental design, gathering and analyzing data, and interpreting results.
- Demonstrate scientific literacy by evaluating social, ethical, and equity issues connected to biological sciences.
- Describe how living things are made of smaller structures that work together to enable the organism to survive.
- Compare how living things depend on each other and the physical environment as they interact to obtain, change, and exchange matter andenergy.
- Explain how the diversity of living things is the result of the evolution of organisms through mechanisms such as heredity, random change, andnatural selection.
- Collaborate on laboratory investigations of the biological content using appropriate, safe methods and equipment.
